Program Unit Funding (PUF) / Early Childhood Services (ECS) Supports

Alberta early-education supports for young children who need additional help before Grade 1, including some children on the autism spectrum.

<p><strong>Program Unit Funding (PUF)</strong> is an Alberta Education and Childcare grant used by school authorities and independent Early Childhood Services (ECS) operators to support eligible young children. It is not a cash benefit paid directly to families.</p><h3>Who may qualify</h3><p>For the 2026/27 school year, Alberta’s funding manual covers children from <strong>2 years 8 months to under 6 years</strong> who have been assessed and diagnosed with a severe disability or a moderate-to-severe language delay. An autism diagnosis is not required for every child; the documented condition and its impact on learning must meet Alberta’s education criteria.</p><p>Alberta’s current AHS autism pathway lists a minimum age of 2 years 6 months, while the current Education page and funding manual use 2 years 8 months. Eligibility

For 2026/27: children aged 2 years 8 months to under 6 who are assessed and diagnosed with a severe disability or moderate-to-severe language delay. An autism diagnosis is not universally required. Official Alberta pages differ by two months on the minimum age, so confirm locally.

How to apply

Contact a local school board or independent Early Childhood Services operator about programming and registration. The operator determines the required assessment/education documentation and submits funding information to Alberta.
