CharterAbility — Free Accessible Boating in Oakville
Offered by CharterAbility Cruising for the Disabled
Free, accessible pontoon-boat cruises on Sixteen Mile Creek for people with disabilities or mobility challenges, together with caregivers, family and friends.
About CharterAbility
CharterAbility provides free recreational cruises on Sixteen Mile Creek from Busby Park in downtown Oakville. Its dock, on-site washrooms and pontoon boats are fully accessible.
The current booking page describes trips as approximately 50 minutes. Each boat can accommodate no more than eight people, depending on the number and size of wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Groups of seven are preferred for comfort.
Autism and sensory planning
CharterAbility is a general disability-inclusive recreation program. It is not advertised as an autism-specific or sensory-adapted service.
When requesting a trip, autistic visitors and families may wish to describe any communication, sensory, mobility or safety needs and ask what accommodations are possible. Families should prepare for outdoor conditions such as engine noise, water movement, wind, sunlight and waiting near the dock.
Guests must remain seated during the cruise and follow the volunteer captain’s safety instructions.
Before your trip
CharterAbility asks guests to:
receive confirmation before considering the trip booked;
confirm weather conditions 24 hours before arrival;
arrive 15 minutes before departure;
wait until the volunteer captain or crew invites the group onto the dock;
dress for the weather and bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, suitable footwear or a jacket when needed.
Program details can change. Confirm current availability, trip length, group capacity and accessibility requirements directly with CharterAbility before travelling.
Eligibility
People of all ages with disabilities, physical limitations, mobility challenges or other personal circumstances may request a trip. Caregivers, companions, family members and friends may join, subject to the boat’s capacity. CharterAbility does not state that an autism diagnosis or diagnostic documentation is required.
