<p><em>This review discusses changes in early intervention and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) over time.</em></p><p><em>AAC can support communication access in many forms, including gestures, pictures, communication boards, and speech-generating tools. It is not limited to one communication profile and should not be withheld until a person “fails” speech.</em></p><p><em>This is a dated review, not a guarantee that one AAC approach is right for everyone.
